As Eastern Kentucky’s unemployment rates continue to rise despite a post-COVID-19 lockdown boost, another key economic figure shows that the region still has far to go to consider its economy “recovered.”

On Sept. 24, the Kentucky Center for Statistics released the state’s county-level unemployment data for August, showing that, while unemployment rose in all 120 counties in August, no area has been hit as hard by that rise as Eastern Kentucky.

Kentucky’s seasonally adjusted preliminary August 2020 unemployment rate was 7.6 percent, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency within the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet (EWDC).

The preliminary August 2020 jobless rate was up 3.1 percentage points from July 2020 and up 3.3 percentage points from the 4.3 percent recorded for the state one year ago.

The preliminary August 2020 jobless rate was up 3.1 percentage points from July 2020 and up 3.3 percentage points from the 4.3 percent recorded for the state one year ago.

(WTVQ) – Kentucky’s seasonally adjusted preliminary July 2020 unemployment rate continues t show the impact of the coronavirus outbreak, hitting 5.7 percent, according to new numbers released Thursday by the Kentucky Center for Statistics , an agency within the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

One key note is the hospitality industry continued to rebound but those job gains remain slow.

State records show that unemployment rates dropped dramatically in June.

But things aren’t as good as the numbers indicate.

Mike Clark, director of the University of Kentucky’s Center for Business and Economic Research, says things haven’t returned to normal.

Kentucky’s official unemployment rate is trending downward since swelling to more than 15 percent at the height of the coronavirus outbreak. 

June’s jobless rate was 4.3 percent, mirroring the rate recorded for the state one year ago.

The preliminary June 2020 jobless rate was down 6.6 percentage points from May 2020 and equaled the 4.3 percent recorded for the state one year ago. The U.S. seasonally adjusted jobless rate for June 2020 was 11.1 percent, down from 13.3 percent in May 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
